A seed is a number that rebuilds the land.
Type it into a new world and the hills come back. Your houses do not. The same digits are not the same world on Java and Bedrock.
These four are from the Minecraft Wiki’s starter-seed notes, for the Bedrock-style versions listed. An update can move a village. Before you travel, open the seed in Chunkbase and pick the edition you actually play. This page does not redraw the map.
